design4health: Synergies of Practice

Our contributors are uniquely placed at the interface of design in health practice and research; the conference will explore creative approaches and perspectives to enhance understanding and experience, and to improve the efficiency of health and wellbeing services and products. We invite submissions with themes including (but not restricted to) those described below.

Key themes:

Methodologies

Design encompasses a wide range of methodologies of practice and of research. Papers exploring the synergies of design and health methods are encouraged.

Making

Design has strengths around envisaging both problems and solutions
to help all stakeholders explore the world of health in new and
exciting ways. Papers exploring innovative methods and case studies
are encouraged.

Measurement

The disciplines of design and health have different ways of understanding, defining and undertaking ‘measurement’. We encourage papers exploring the differences and opportunities around this area.

Areas of interest include:

Participatory approaches to design and research, including;
• Practice-based research
• Co-design
• Open design
• Evidence based design

Trans disciplinary working, including:
• Experiences of working across disciplinary boundaries
• Approaches to building collective understanding
• Creating shared outcomes
• Finding a language of design4health

Opportunities and barriers to innovation:
• Involving, designing and researching with people
• Raising public awareness and changing perceptions
• Ethical questions and dilemmas
• Procurement and regulatory restrictions

Current and future landscapes in design4health, including:
• Identity and dignity
• Social design
• Chronic/long term conditions
• Designing for wellbeing
