Objectives
- To identify patient and professional sensitive indicators to demonstrate the impact of nurse consultant posts on a range of outcomes.
- To match identified outcomes against the proposed framework and refine the framework accordingly.
- To identify the extent to which the impact of nurse consultant posts has been assessed to date.
- To identify factors that may facilitate or hinder measuring the impact of nurse consultant posts on a range of outcomes.
In-depth case studies with six nurse consultants from diverse clinical backgrounds were carried out. This involved interviewing the nurse consultants, a range of staff (e.g. frontline nurses, medical staff, managers), and where possible patients and family members, that the nurse consultants have identified as valuable and appropriate to involve. These interviews aimed to highlight patient and professional sensitive indicators to demonstrating the impact of nurse consultants, examine the extent that impact had been assessed to date, and identify facilitators and barriers to capturing impact.
