I hold Bachelors degrees in both sociology (Leeds) and geology (Liverpool). My PhD was completed at the Open University and was one of the first studies to explore the relationship between language and new 'digital' media use.

I held lecturing positions at the University of Leeds, Open University and Sheffield Hallam and in 2004, led the development of the Communication and Computing Research Centre.

I am currently involved in elements of the LAHRC project and I am working with colleagues at the University of Leeds on political efficacy and internet use.

Recent projects have focused on the social and cultural impacts of the mobile phone and the role of ICT in social inclusion and exclusion.
