Education of Social Workers in Oslo, Norway - Hogeskoleni Oslo

Social Work Programme

Social work education qualifies students for work in various fields, with diverse groups of people. The social worker aims at helping individuals and their families, socially challenged groups, groups and organisations within the local community, public and private health and welfare organisations, to more fully cope with their problems. By attempting to shed light upon the factors that keep clients in difficult circumstances and the resources that can be mobilised for effective action, social workers, in cooperative dialogue with their clients, try to find alternative ways to tackle those difficulties.

Social Welfare

Social welfare qualifies students for work with social clients and for work within welfare administration. The programme provides thorough knowledge within social science, health science, law and economics. The students will get insight into the aims of welfare politics and into the welfare system and how it works to attend to the clients` needs. Focus is placed on collaboration between linking bodies in the welfare system, and on a holistic view on the remedial measures within the system.

Child Welfare Programme

The objective of the programme is to educate child welfare workers who, in a personal and moral manner, will carry out social work with children and youth. In Oslo, the curriculum profile and choice of subjects will reflect many of the social challenges facing a large city, such as ethnic identity, multiculturalism, modified family and living conditions, substance abuse, violence, and marginal youth cultures. The child welfare worker's competence is oriented towards children and youth, their family situation, and their local environment.

Master Programme in Social Work

Building upon the basic skills and insights of the Bachelor programme, the Master programme qualifies students for work within social research and social programme development, social work education, guidance, consultation, social planning and administration. The programme promotes the art and science of social work practice and aims at developing highly qualified practitioners.

Master Programme in International Social Welfare and Health Policy

The programme is designed to qualify students for position in social and health services, and organisations engaged in international health and social welfare. The curriculum focuses on comparative social welfare theories and concepts, in addition to elective courses for different specialisations. Language of instruction is English.
