The role design plays in developing successful healthcare technologies – PhD

healthcare technologies

This program of study is influenced by Matt’s previous work on his MA, and has been shaped more by his time working for the User Centred Healthcare Design group; since part of the work has been looking closely at how user experience can be captured and evaluated as part of the design process, and how this can then help the designer to empathise with the user more.

The aim of this PhD is to understand the barriers to design playing a larger role in the development of Assistive Technology / Telerehabilitation currently, and what the issues are surrounding the development of these devices from an end user / Healthcare Professional (HCP) perspective. Producing a successful piece will require holding the needs of the end user, HCP and technology in tension, and exploring this through a series of case studies and practising design that the PhD will develop.
