The organisers of Design Health 2013 are very pleased to announce that a 24hour Inclusive Design Challenge<\/strong> will be taking place as part of the conference! Teams of designers, medics, those living with chronic conditions and their carers will work through the night \u00a0responding to a set brief to deliver\u00a0well-resolved concepts to a team of judges.<\/em><\/address>\n

The Design Challenge is\u00a0facilitated by Julia Cassim<\/a>, Visiting Senior Research Fellow of the Helen Hamlyn Centre for\u00a0Design\u00a0at the Royal College of Art who developed the format. The\u00a0Design\u00a0Challenge runs across an unbroken 24 hours, with teams made up of professional designers, people living with a chronic condition, their carers and health professionals.<\/p>\n

The event brings together people of different professions, chiefly designers, medics, and allied health professionals with people who live with chronic conditions (the design partners). This user-centred approach is powerful, with well-resolved concepts delivered at the end of the event. These concepts are judged by a panel of experts, who have intimate knowledge of the conditions and the design process.<\/p>\n

Themes<\/h2>\n

The two chronic conditions that form the focus of the event are Cystic Fibrosis<\/strong>, and Motor Neurone Disease<\/strong>. Both of these conditions have a very great impact on a person’s life, but in different ways. Designing interventions, products or environments that facilitate maximum wellbeing for people living with these conditions is very challenging. Bringing people together to work on a difficult problem, and leveraging their individual experiences and knowledge is a valuable way to create a new approach to a complex situation (whether that’s a new product, health service, or even an environment).<\/p>\n

Programme summary<\/h2>\n

The event begins on Monday morning with registration, then followed by a briefing and split into teams at lunchtime. Early afternoon, the design work begins for an unbroken 24 hours. At the end of this period of time, the teams are invited to submit their work, which is then presented to the other teams, guests and the judging panel. Once the teams have presented, the judges retire to consider their verdict, while the audience and teams vote on a ‘people’s choice award’. The votes are counted, and the winners of both prizes are announced. A drinks reception follows, which early arrivers for the D4H conference are welcome to attend; the submissions from all of the teams will be exhibited throughout the conference and available for all conference attendees to view and comment on.<\/p>\n

Team leaders<\/h2>\n

We are excited to welcome Adam Eager, John Bateson, Jim Dawton, Gianpaolo Fusari\u00a0and Yuni Lee as design team leaders to this event. We will be welcoming more people to Sheffield in July to take part, and would very much like to hear from people interested in the challenge.<\/p>\n
