Luke Bates

Luke graduated from Sheffield Hallam University with a BA in Criminology and Sociology followed by an MRes in Criminology from the University of Manchester. During his degrees Luke developed an academic interest in the study of terrorism and radicalisation. He dedicated his theses to this particular topic through conducting both theoretical work on lone-actor terrorists as well as by undertaking primary research into online extremism.

At CENTRIC Luke has mainly been applying his criminological background and knowledge to the study of surveillance, helping to carry out large, multi-stage, mixed methods research into the subject, but has also applied himself to research on terrorism and cybercrime as well. He enjoys utilising a variety of research methods, and while he typically favours qualitative research, he also has a history of using quantitative techniques, going as far as using statistical programming.
