Laurie Hirsch

Laurie am currently employed as a senior lecturer at Sheffield Hallam University in the department of computing where he leads the Masters level course on Web and Cloud Computing. He also works on the EU funded ePoolice project where he co-leads a work package concerned with visualization, situation assessment and threat sentiment analysis. Previously Laurie has worked in industry and has a researcher on various aspects of information retrieval, data mining and visualization. His focus has been on the application of evolutionary algorithms such as genetic programming to text classification and text data mining. He has also developed a system for the automatic generation of co-occurrence graphs from unstructured online text. The graph is based on word co-occurrence and word frequency and can be used as a summary of large and small documents or document collection. Laurie is currently researching in the area of sentiment analysis of live social media data.
