Sheffield Hallam University Special Collection

18tt and 19th Century Books
on Art and Design

This collection is the substantial remainder of the library of the Sheffield School of Art, fire-bombed in 1940, and represents the holdings of a typical art college library of that time. Items of interest include catalogues from the Great Exhibition of 1851, engravings by Piranesi, Stubbs' "Anatomy of the horse", Muybridge's "Animal locomotion", publications by Palladio and Robert Adam, pattern books and architectural engravings. The oldest item, part of a Latin Dictionary, dates back to 1561.
