I work in health services research with a focus upon research to meet the needs of older and disabled people. I have a particular interest in how the needs of people with dementia can be most appropriately met.

I worked in mental health services and services for older people as an occupational therapist. Following over ten years working in the NHS I commenced my research career, working as a research assistant in a project which looked at how the behaviour of people with severe dementia is affected by their environment.  The impact of this first experience of research has remained with me for the last twenty years. There were many mixed emotions; shock at some of the ward based routines and accepted ways of treating very vulnerable people which I had to observe and record, enlightenment at the ways in which research findings can truly inform practice (and wishing that I had been more aware when working in clinical practice), and a growing determination to try and change things for the better.

I believe that Lab4living is a powerful vehicle for improving services provided to the most vulnerable in society.   By listening to what people need and desire at different stages of the lifecourse, taking full account of their dignity and personhood and reflecting all these dimensions in the improved design of objects, buildings and services, we can begin to address the inequalities that still pervade society.  I remain inspired by my first research experience, by  the different generations within my own family and also, more recently by my own future older age, when I hope to be treated with dignity and respect irrespective of the possible impact of illness and disability.
