Sheffield Hallam design hits health note at European conference

Clinicians, patients, academics and designers from across Europe have convened at Sheffield Hallam University to highlight the crucial role design plays in healthcare innovation.

Design4Health 2013, a week-long series of events hosted by Sheffield Hallam’s Lab4Living created a forum to discuss and develop designs and ideas to improve patient care.

Teddy bear designed to teach children

A cystic fibrosis nurse took up her trust’s challenge to help develop a product in just 24 hours that would improve care for her patients.

Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust senior sister Sue Lloyd briefed designers about the problems faced by young patients with cystic fibrosis so a resource could be developed.

Sheffield hospital staff help with design creations

Doctors, nurses and diet experts helped designers put on their thinking caps to take part in a 24-hour challenge to help cystic fibrosis sufferers. 

Designers were given a day to create new products or services which could help people cope with the illness better during the international Design 4 Health Conference at Sheffield Hallam University.

Alaster Yoxall: The term ‘frustration-free’

Alaster Yoxall of Sheffield Hallam University discusses the second European Design4Health conference. 

Work to be presented at the second European Design4Health conference to be held at Sheffield Hallam University this week (4-6 July), explores how serious the issue of difficult to access packaging really is.

I worked with researchers at the University of Wollongong in Australia. Research we have done has shown a link between packaging use in hospitals and malnutrition in patients.
