Health by Design

Would you like to see some Hanky Pancreas? Possibly not a question you are asked everyday. Yet beneath the quirky title belies a significant design innovation that has the potential to impact on the lives of thousands of people with diabetes, removing some of the stigma that can be associated with living with a long term condition. This is just one of the innovative products on show at the Design 4 Health Exhibition at the forthcoming Design 4 Health conference. This conference recognises that design has a significant role to play in improving the quality of life of people living with a range of chronic conditions.

Claire Craig, Occupational Therapist describes the innovative nature of the conference in the following way, ‘The relationship between health and design has always been recognised. However for many years emphasis has very much focused on products to promote and improve physical functioning. Recently however there has been the recognition that health/design collaborations have an equal role to play in meeting the emotional and social needs of individuals in order to improve quality of life.’

Designing Health, as Physical, Mental and Social Well-being, is just one of the many exhibits that reinforces this, challenging health care practitioners and designers to take a more holistic view and offering a number of tools to transform ideas into reality.

The Design 4 Health Exhibition showcases work from an international selection of artists, designers and researchers, bringing together in one exhibition a diverse set of creative responses to a broad range of healthcare issues.

The selected works cover a spectrum of art and design forms, from interventions intended to provoke and challenge – to documentary video from the field hospital at Camp Bastion, Afghanistan – interactive displays, and innovative product design and service solutions.

The common thread that brings together these different expressions is a desire to engage with the universal subjects of healthcare and a consideration for the patient in all of us.

Exhibition open: Wednesday 13 July – Friday 15 July 2011.
Location: Sheffield Institute of Arts Gallery, Furnival Building, Sheffield Hallam University.
